Leaves in Tile Roofs are a problem

Saturday, December 24, 2011

Leaves are a constant source of headache for roofers and a constant source of problem for all roofing types; especially for tiled roofs. Tile roofing seems to be the worst affected due to the access leaves have to valleys and gutters.

Have a look at the pictures below, this is a great example of a flat tiled roof having problems with leaves blowing up under the tiles.

The problem arises because once the rain has come and the leaves are blocking the gutters the water then has nowhere to go. The water builds up in the gutters and spills over into eave lines. The leaves turn into a thick mulch which also builds up causing dams and starts forcing the water into the roof cavity thus causing not only external damage like rotting gutters and down pipes and in some cases blocking drainage, but internal damage as well as shown in the last picture above.

This is a reminder how important it is to have checks and maintenance done on your roof regularly.

Roof maintenance is a MUST

Saturday, December 17, 2011

Maintaining your roof is a very crucial part of looking after your assets. With a yearly check either by yourselves or a professionals like Southern Cross Roofing a lot of cost and stress can be avoided. Not only can you damage your roof  but also extensive damage can occur to the inside of your property.  Check out this picture, this could have all been avoided by paying a small cost for a roof check, however, this Sydney couple have left it until the ceiling of their house has fallen through and are now looking at a huge cost in house renovations.

Generally speaking at a minimum even to clean out the leaves from the gutters and eaves can help the maintenance of the roof. The pictures around tell the story. I know I would prefer to be paying a roofer a small sum once a year than to have to fork out a huge amount in having a whole re-roof done. This neglect brought the whole roof crashing down.

Thats why its is so important to clear the leaf debris on a regular basis. If you are thinking of getting a professional in once a year which is highly recommended then give Southern Cross Roofing a call they will insure they let you know when its time to invest in your roof with new gutters, tiles or eaves and when repairs are needed. We are the roofers you can trust if your maintaining your roof well enough and no repairs are needed we will tell you that also.

Remember, regular check up and roof maintenance is a must to ensure your roof lasts as long as it should and to avoid your property looking like this.....

Keeping Your Roof Safe And Sound

Friday, March 11, 2011
Although a roof is meant to last a long time, it is not a guarantee that it will be able to stay undamaged if it is not given proper attention and care. Roof maintenance is essential to keep your roof in shape. You don’t really have to call an expert to check your roof; sometimes you can make some simple inspection by yourself every now and then.

Though there are many different types of roof, maintenance approaches are generally the same for most of them. But still, there are some instances that extensive maintenance task must be applied to specific roofs. The usual thing done when inspecting a roof involves checking the cladding, flashing, gutters, chimneys and all the roofing materials.

Climbing on the ladder and getting on your roof is the easiest thing you can do for inspection. Of course, inspecting your home from the inside is different when you are really on the top of your house. You must check your roof for leak spots especially when cold season is approaching. Sweep off all the fallen leaves, branches and other debris on your roof. Don’t forget to look at the gutters and remove clogs, if there are any.

In rainy places in Australia, like Saint Ives, moss and algae may appear on the roof and these must be cleaned up to keep it clean. Also take heed about other materials on your roof like antennas and wires. Make sure that they are installed properly and that they have strong foundation. If there are some branches of trees near your house that hang directly on your roof, you might want to trim them too. Painting the roof, although may be costly, must be done every few years as well. Roofing paint and other roof coatings give protection to the roof’s surface. If there are missing tiles, don’t hesitate to buy some pieces for replacement. Although roof maintenance means you will have to spend some cash, it must be done for your own safety. Remember, prevention is better than cure.

Repairs

Thornleigh area 25 October 2010

Southern Cross Roofing receive many calls for repairs to roofs, not always due to leakage, some times clients just want their roof overalled, cleaned or like a recent Thornleigh customer who could see his roof was looking a little drab, just requested a complete check over. He decided upon having the Terracotta roof tiles cleaned, new valley irons installed, cement work redone and a new front porch, as this was found to be in very poor condition. This action by the customer no doubt saved his roof from leaks and internal damage to ceilings.

The work consisted of removing all the ridge caps and valley irons. Fixing new colour bond valley irons in place, new cement which not only re secures the ridge caps but also reseals them against leaks or at the very least dampness. The terracotta tiles were an old Wunderlich tile that were cleaned with a power Gurney, they came up sparkling and the new bedding and pointing (cement work) makes the roof look like new. The front veranda has new colour bond clip lock roof sheets, with all new flashings to seal against leakage.

All the gutters were cleaned out thoroughly and with all rubbish removed you wouldn’t know we had been there, other than the sparkling roof.

The customers action has given him peace of mind for many years to come, it costs nothing to have your roof checked out, as all quotes are free.

Visit our website or give us a call and have your roof overalled.
