CSR Conference

Saturday, December 03, 2011

Recently a CSR Conference was held at the Mean Fildders Greenway Room in Rouse Hill, for all CSR Roofing Specialists, being a Sydney Roofing Company, Southern Cross Roofing were invited to attend.

Many CSR employees were key speakers at the conference including Brian Doherty. Brian spoke about the down turn in the market and the likely predictions for the future which he enhanced by providing graphs.

Brians discussions were based around all things that relate to and effect the CSR Specialists, such as, New Roofs, Re Roofs, extensions and briefly touching on roof repairs.

Linda Kosl then delivered information on marketing and how best to promote the CSR Roofing Specialist. Suggestions included promoting on social networking sites such as twitter, Tv advertising on The Lifestyle channel on foxtel and general information on updating websites.

Work Safety representatives also made an appearance to reiterate on the importance of safety clothing, including roofing harnesses, correct safety shoes and eye protection.

A HIA representative continued on this track by talking about the new 'Working at safe heights code'. He informed us that all states will soon be in harminisation by coming together and using the same 'Working at safe heights code'.

Mark Webster the director of Southern Cross Roofing was then asked to speak about his new venture into the roofing supplies business. Mark has recently opened a new business called Sydney Roof and Building Supplies and provided information on the products available. He started by explaining that Sydney Roof and Building Supplies is a one stop shop in Mount Kuring-Gai that offers a full roofing product range from small but crucial tools like trowels and tape measures all the way to bedding racks and elevators. He explained that a free delivery service is available to your contractors or yourself straight to site.

Mark focused on 3 main things during the evening:

The first was the new 'Fusion' Nail gun and its capabilities touching briefly on the peg out guide that accompanies it.

The next was roofing clips and the speculation over the pointing code in recent weeks following the cyclone up in Queensland. Mark provided a clip board to highlight the expanse of clips available from Sydney Roof and Building Supplies including not only Fixing Caps, Starter clips and short course clips but a wide variety of head lap clips.

The Acry Flash lead range that is available was the last thing Mark concentrated on, giving a detailed description of what Acry Flash is and the many benefits Mark sees in using this flashing product. He explained that not only is it water tank friendly but it offers a more durable alternative to other flashing products and more importantly being the same cost as lead.

Saturday, November 12, 2011

Due to the recent weather that Sydney has been exposed to, Southern Cross Roofing has been very busy working on lots of roof repairs and pending roof maintenance. New roofs and re-roofs are extremely difficult to conquer in this stormy weather due to the safety of the roofers and the amount of time that the bare roof would be exposed to the elements.

Southern Cross Roofing have found many difficult problems arising over the last few weeks that you may find could apply to your own roofs. If you have experienced any of these problems or any similar problems relating to your roof, why not give Southern Cross Roofing a call on 02 9477 7961. We will be happy to come to your home a offer a free roofing quote.

Visual Checks For Damaged Roofs

Thursday, May 05, 2011
Visual checks should be carried out regularly to spot any potential developing problems to the roof which, if left unchecked could prove expensive to fix.

From the outside of the house visually study the roofs ridge capping, if you see signs of deterioration such as loose or missing ridge capping or cement loosening, it’s a sure sign you need to call in a professional roofing expert to further assess the problem and advise on the necessary roof repairs that are needed.

Also, try walking around the home checking underneath the roofs eaves. If under the eaves show any signs of water stains it could be an indication of blocked gutters or damaged roof tiles and should be investigated immediately to once again avoid expensive roof repairs that could develop if left unchecked.

In and around Sydney you are invited to call Southern Cross Roofing for friendly advice on how to approach any problems you may have detected with your roof.

Different Roof Shingles

Wednesday, March 09, 2011
A popular type of roof cladding out there is the shingle. Roof shingles consist of thin overlapping components which are primarily rectangular in shape and attached in rows from the bottom edge of the roof going upwards. Over time, various materials have been used as roof shingles – from wood, to slate, to metal and many more. Each element has its own advantages and disadvantages. This article will help you become familiar with the different roof shingles type.

Wood has been used in most roof shingles. Wood shingles are one of the readily available resources, or at least back then, that’s why it is widespread. It offers some insulation but wood shingles are not very advisable for rainy places like Sydney, North Shore and other places in Australia that are often hit by rainstorms, because it is not that durable, in spite of its expensive cost. However, it can last for fifty years or more if properly maintained.

Another very popular type of shingle is the metal shingle. Metal shingle can include steel, aluminum, tin and copper. This type is actually durable and can overcome high-velocity wind, hail and rain. It has a life span of more or less fifty years and does not need much maintenance. Because of the materials used, it can be quite expensive and is difficult to install.

One beautiful type of roof shingles is slate. Slate shingles are made from natural materials and is distinct in appearance. It is durable and is long-lasting. However, like metal shingle, it is costly and difficult to install.

Another attractive roof cladding option is tile which includes concrete and clay. It can be expensive too, but not as expensive as slate. It is durable and easy to maintain but it is fragile and can easily break.

Asphalt shingle is often used as roof cover too mainly because, it is inexpensive. It is very manageable and easy to repair but it can last up to thirty years only. It is also not good for hot weather conditions.

These are just some of the most popular types of roof shingles but there are still more kinds produced and being produced by roof specialists. There may be a long list of different types of shingles, but only choose the most appropriate for your home.

North Shore Leaky Roofs

Wednesday, February 16, 2011
Adequate rainfall is experienced throughout the year in places like the North Shore because of its subtropical climate. One of the most common problems of households during rainy days, especially when occasional cloud bursts come about, is a leaking roof. There are many causes of roof leaks such as cracks because of defective roofing, poor roof materials, overflow of water because of clogged gutters, or the roof is just plain old and needs replacement.

Some roof leaks are simple in nature and may be caused by minor defects on the roofing. There are also instances where the problem can be more complex than it seems and further assistance is required. Be it simple or complex, it’s always important to take actions to resolve the problem as soon as possible in order to prevent bigger damages. When you notice the roof leaking, immediately check for areas that it may be coming from. Check the flashings, drains, roof perimeters, particularly at joints, or if it is really hard to find, seek help. Once the source of leak is located, you can personally do some repairs, or if it looks complicated, contact a professional. Sometimes, you may think that leaks appear when in fact, the roof is not really leaking. This is because of condensation of warm air inside the building and cold moisture outside.

Leaky or not, it’s still advisable to have your roof inspected every now and then, especially if rainfall is getting more frequent. Call us Now for advice or a quote on 94777961.

Repairs

Wednesday, February 02, 2011

Well repairs are the order of the day. The weather in Sydney / North Shore has turned on over the last couple of weeks has been dreadful to say the least.

One customer had water pouring in on their newly installed kitchen! Luckily for them they were recommended to us, I was able to get there the same day & repairs have been carried out already, hence no damage done.

Our recent customers who fortunately have had roof maintenance / repairs performed before the recent rains are sat pretty. Another customer phoned to say thanks for the great job we had done and although they didnt have a leak, are just greatful for the preventative measures taken and of course just in the nick of time.

The summer months are unpredicable with all the humid summer storms just waiting to pounce. So don’t wait, prevent those damaged ceilings and sleepless nights.

Repairs

Monday, January 31, 2011

Thornleigh area 25 October 2010

Southern Cross Roofing receive many calls for repairs to roofs, not always due to leakage, some times clients just want their roof overalled, cleaned or like a recent Thornleigh customer who could see his roof was looking a little drab, just requested a complete check over. He decided upon having the Terracotta roof tiles cleaned, new valley irons installed, cement work redone and a new front porch, as this was found to be in very poor condition. This action by the customer no doubt saved his roof from leaks and internal damage to ceilings.

The work consisted of removing all the ridge caps and valley irons. Fixing new colour bond valley irons in place, new cement which not only re secures the ridge caps but also reseals them against leaks or at the very least dampness. The terracotta tiles were an old Wunderlich tile that were cleaned with a power Gurney, they came up sparkling and the new bedding and pointing (cement work) makes the roof look like new. The front veranda has new colour bond clip lock roof sheets, with all new flashings to seal against leakage.

All the gutters were cleaned out thoroughly and with all rubbish removed you wouldn’t know we had been there, other than the sparkling roof.

The customers action has given him peace of mind for many years to come, it costs nothing to have your roof checked out, as all quotes are free.

Visit our website or give us a call and have your roof overalled.
